Original editorial cartoon on card in ink for the Christian Science Monitor, 1937, shows the lighthouse or beacon of ‘democracy’ being buffeted by waves of ‘Fascism’ and ‘Communism’, but standing firm and continuing to radiate its light. By mid-1937 the danger posed by the dictatorships in Europe and Asia to world peace was, as here, perhaps not yet fully appreciated in the United States, or perhaps the intention is to instill a (false) sense of security in people’s minds. Card size 33 x 27 cm (13 x 10.5 inch), image size 30 x 25 cm, signed lower right, caption in ink in lower border, date stamped Apr 16 1937 on verso. Card attached loosely to a sheet of brown backing paper with a newspaper clipping of the cartoon attached to it and bearing the date 1.6.37. In excellent condition.
