Original political cartoon on card in pen and ink published as ‘Cartoon of the Day’ in the Daily News, 1912, shows a Chinese citizen reading an announcement by the ‘Manchu dynasty’: ‘Giving up business. Entire stock to be sold regardless of cost. Remarkable collection of genuine antiques to be cleared’. To the left is a notice stating that ‘these premises will shortly be opened under entirely new management’. In 1912 the Chinese Empire, ruled for centuries by the Manchu or Qing dynasty, finally collapsed and was replaced by the Republic of China. The Republic was not a resounding success and was replaced by the present Communist regime in 1949. Card size 26.5 x 25 cm (10.5 x 10 inch), image size 23 x 22 cm, signed lower left, caption written in pencil in lower border. A dark brown (water) stain runs the length of the card on the left hand side, partially affecting the image which has been protected to some extent by an overslip which has the cartoon details in ink and is tipped on the left hand side. There is another pencil sketch on verso concerning Ulster and Winston Churchill with the title "Mob Law", but this is only a rough sketch. In only fair condition
