Details
Domingo Faustino Sarmiento was a writer and scholar who became president of Argentina in 1868. His political activities and his outspokenness provoked the rage of Argentine military dictator Juan Manuel de Rosas, who exiled him to Chile in 1840. He returned to Argentina to help overthrow Rosas in 1852, reentered Argentine politics and was elected president of Argentina in 1868. He ended the war with Paraguay and brought education to a largely illiterate country.
