Original editorial cartoon on card in pen, ink and crayon, 1948, syndicated to a number of newspapers, shows President Truman (once a haberdasher) attempting to persuade a reluctant ‘GOP Congress’ elephant to try on ‘price controls’ and ‘anti-inflation specials’. In July 1948 Truman presented Congress with proposals for price controls and anti-inflation measures designed to control fast-rising prices and head off economic depression. The Republicans were against any such measures, although a watered-down version of Truman’s proposals was passed in August, the last law passed by the 80th Congress. Card size 36.5 x 29 cm (14 x 11.5 inch), image size 30 x 26.5 cm, signed lower right with nine zeros as underline, in very good condition.
