Portrait of Paulus Potter (1625-1654) at work in his studio. Potter left about a hundred paintings, most of them in small format. In addition to paintings, he also made a small number of etchings. Originally he painted history paintings, just like his father. However, he became famous as a beast painter, because he mainly painted the cattle in the Dutch landscape. He painted realistically, paying close attention to the skin, the expression and the attitude of the animals. He sometimes depicted the animals from a low point of view, making them stand out well against the sky. Color lithograph by Pieter Wilhelmus van de Weijer (1816-1880), after a drawing by Willem Pieter Hoevenaar (1808-1863). Signed in print. Made in Utrecht around 1850.
