Portrait bust to the right of the painter Otto van Veen (1557-1629), at the age of 72. Van Veen was a court painter to Alexander Farnese, the Duke of Parma. After his death in 1592, he became the tutor of Peter Paul Rubens and court painter to the Archdukes Albert of Austria and Isabella of Spain. After 1600, Van Veen became increasingly involved in the publication of emblem books, including "Amorum emblemata" (1608) and "Amoris divini emblemata" (1615). He has spent most of his active life in the southern Netherlands. He represented the Counter-Reformation in the style of the High Renaissance. He stayed in Italy from 1574 to at least 1579. In 1593 he became a free master in the Guild of Saint Luke. Etching and engraving by Paulus Pontius (1603-1658), after Gertruida van Veen (1602-1643). Made in Antwerp, c. 1650.
