Portrait bust of Anna Boleyn (ca. 1501 - 1536). She was Henry VIII's second wife and Queen of England from 1533 to 1536. Henry divorced his first wife in 1531 and secretly married Anna Boleyn. After the final annulment of the first marriage to Catherine of Aragon by Thomas Cranmer, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Anna Boleyn was crowned in June 1533. In September 1533 she gave birth to her daughter Elizabeth, who later became Queen Elizabeth I of England. In May 1536, Anna was arrested and transferred to the Tower of London on charges of adultery, witchcraft and incest, and her five alleged lovers (and herself two days later) were beheaded. At the bottom of the portrait two putti and on a pedestal her name and a 4-line verse in French. Copper engraving by Cornelis Martinus Vermeulen (1644-1708), after the painting by Adriaen van der Werff (1659-1722). Signed in print. Manufactured ca. 1700.
