Portrait bust within oval of Joannes Antonides van der Goes (1647-1684). Van der Goes was a seventeenth-century poet, stage translator and playwright. Out of admiration for the Dutch plays by Hooft and Vondel in particular, Antonides van der Goes began to translate works by Horatius, Ovidius and Silius Italicus into Dutch. In 1666 he wrote his first tragedy, Trazil or Overwhelms Sina. His most famous work was (and still is) his extensive poetry De Ystroom (1671). In it Joannes Antonides van der Goes describes a walk along the IJ in Amsterdam. Etching and engraving by Pieter van Gunst (c. 1659 - 1731), after a painting by Ludolf Bakhuizen (1630-1708). With a 4-line verse in Dutch by David van Hoogstraten (1658-1724). Made around 1710. Signed in print.
