Original political cartoon on card in pen and ink, published in the Eastern Daily Press, 1974, shows President Nixon, sword-bearer, is becoming increasingly entangled in the Watergate controversy symbolized by the tapes which he refused to hand over to Watergate investigators. The more he becomes entangled, the more compromised he becomes and the more difficult it is for him to wield the sword representing ‘leadership of the west’. In May 1974 impeachment hearings were opened against president Nixon. In July, the Supreme Court denied Nixon's claim of executive privilege and ruled that all tape recordings must be released to the special prosecutor. Once the recordings were released, it didn't take long for Nixon's house of cards to collapse. One of the secret recordings confirmed the allegations of the Watergate cover-up, indicating that Nixon knew about it from the beginning. Card size 31 x 24 cm (12 x 9.5 inch), image size 29 x 22 cm, signed lower right, typed caption in lower border. Dated 18 May 1974 on verso. In very good condition.
