Portrait of the poet Jan Vos (c. 1610 - 1667) with a roll of paper in his hand. Below the portrait a poem of praise to Vos by Joost van den Vondel. was a Dutch literary expert. He wrote plays and poems. Vos was a glazier by trade and in that position supplied all the windows for the new town hall on Dam Square. Closing windows was more profitable for him than closing verses. At the same time Jan Vos played an important role as director of plays and as director of the theater. He organized parades on behalf of the mayors and had dozens of floats decorated with scenes, which sometimes resulted in criticism, ridicule and disapproval. Vos was an outspoken personality and made an important contribution to cultural life in Amsterdam. Etching and engraving by Andries II van Buysen (active 1698-1747), after a design by Karel Dujardin (1626-1678). Signed in print. Manufactured as an illustration for: J. Vos. "All the poems." Amsterdam: H. and G. Bos, 1726. Source: Rijksmuseum, 2015.
