Details
Shekels were struck during the fifth and fourth centuries BCE by several rulers of Tyre, a city of ancient Phoenicia. This type was struck for almost two centuries (126 BCE - 66CE), with little change, other than a wide variety in the form of dates and monograms. Obv.: an eagle with a palm branch over its shoulder, standing on the prow of a ship (with various symbols and a date represented by one or more Greek letters). Rev.: portrait of Melkart (like the Greek's hero Heracles).
