Portrait bust to the right of Gerard van Loon (1683-1758) at the age of 49 in an oval with edge lettering and a coat of arms at the top. The portrait rests on a plinth with a cartouche with a four-line verse in French. To the left of the pedestal next to the portrait a putto holding open a piece of curtain and to the right books, an oil lamp and coins. Van Loon was a Dutch lawyer, historian and above all an avid collector of medals, who also caused a furore as a historian and publisher of historical sources. In his early years he was also a writer of poems and tragedies. Copper engraving and etching by Jacob Houbraken (1698-1780), after the painting by Frans van Mieris (1635-1681). Published in Amsterdam, ca. 1732. Signed in print. Source: Rijksmuseum, 2015.
