Portrait bust to the left within oval of Volcher Coiter (1534-1576). Coiter was a physician and anatomist; joined the Reformation; studied in Italy (Bologna); 1569-1574 city doctor of Nuremberg; then in the service of Count Palatine Johann Casimir; during his campaign in France in support of the Huguenots, he went along as an army doctor and was killed. Author of important medical writings. Etching and engraving by Johann Friedrich Leonart (1633-1680). Probably copied from an original from 1575.
