No. 5. Development of Submarine Vessels German Submersible “U1” of 240 tons, built in 1906 at the renowned Krupp yard in Kiel. This vessel is driven by twin screws, has a surface speed of 11 knots, a submerged speed of 9 knots, and carries one torpedo tube. This vessel carries an extensive superstructure in order to insure seaworthiness and stability, and she operates on an even keel submerged by means of the use of hydroplanes. She is a very close approach to the American submersibles of the “Lake” type and has met the substantial endorsement of several European naval powers.
