Bust of Henry VIII (1491-1547), King of England. The print is captioned by a French poem about his life. He was King of England, Lord of Ireland and later King of Ireland from 1509 to 1547. He was of the House of Tudor and was a son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. Hendrik was notorious for his marital troubles: he had six wives, two of whom he had beheaded. During his reign, England and Wales were legally united into one kingdom, more than two centuries after England's conquest of Wales. An even more significant development was the separation of the Anglican Church from the Church of Rome, over a conflict with the Pope over the dissolution of his first marriage. With this he promoted the Protestant Reformation. Copper engraving by Pieter van Gunst (ca. 1659 - 1731), after the painting by Adriaen van der Werff (1659-1722). Signed in print. Manufactured ca. 1700.
