Portrait bust to the left inside oval of Lodewijk Ernst van Brunswijk-Wolfenbüttel (1718-1788). Below the oval a pedestal with the caption. The Duke of Brunswick was a soldier in Austrian and Dutch service. From August 4, 1751 to October 14, 1784, he was military governor of 's-Hertogenbosch, which was strategically important to the Republic. There were regular big dinners at the Duke's; he was mockingly called De Dikke Hertog. Copper engraving by Jacob Houbraken (1698-1780), after a drawing by Aert Schouman (1710-1792) from 1755. Published in Leiden and Amsterdam by Gerard onder de Linden, ca. 1760. Source: Rijksmuseum, 2015.
