Original editorial cartoon on card in pencil, published in the Nashville Banner, c. 1950, shows president Harry Truman talking to a hunter holding a double barrelled shotgun and commenting: Well, I see you've been fishin' again!!! To the right is a ‘Russian’ bear nailed to the side of a building with a bowie knife. Below a hunting dog looks on. Refers to the McCarthy anti-communist witch-hunt in the United States between 1950 and 1954. Truman was sceptical about many of McCarthy’s claims about the US government being riddled with Soviet spies, hence the ‘red herring’ and the ‘fishing’. The ‘committee’ is the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). This cartoon and others were featured in the Fall 1990 ‘Keynoter’ magazine of the American Political Items Collectors (APIC). Card size 47 x 33 cm (18.5 x 13 inch), image size 41 x 28 cm, signed lower right. Caption in pencil on upper border, printing instructions in lower border. Small 2 cm tear on top edge, and 2 cm band of age toning along top edge, otherwise very good condition
