Original editorial cartoon on card in pencil and crayon, published in the New York Post, 1941 shows a German soldier as an ape/beast who has just shot ‘French hostages’. A sign bears the words: ‘AVIS, c’est défendu..... (NOTICE, it is forbidden to....). A ‘V’ (for Victory?) has been written over the notice. This is a condemnation of the ruthless practice of the German occupiers of France during WW2 of killing hostages when their own troops or installations were attacked or damaged by resistance fighters. Card size 44 x 36 cm (17 x 14 inch), image size 36 x 32 cm, signed and dated 8/19/41 in lower corner. Caption in lower border and inscribed to collector Murray Harris who was a well known collector of graphic art in California. Small stain in the lower right corner. In very good condition.
