Original editorial cartoon on card in pencil, published in the New York Journal, 1943, shows Paul Joseph Goebbels, the ‘poison dwarf’, Nazi Minster of Public Information (Propaganda) riding his microphone, and doing a Paul Revere (who was famous for alerting the Colonial militia to the approach of British forces before the battles of Lexington and Concord at the beginning of the American War of Independence), trying to alert the rest of the world to the danger of the advance of the Soviet forces in eastern Europe following the German defeat at the Battle of Stalingrad: ‘Wake up everybody! The Reds are coming!’ German propaganda now started to emphasize the ‘red’ threat, Goebbels knowing that some in Britain and the USA would lend a sympathetic ear to such ideas. Card size 40.5 x 30 cm (16 x 12 inch), image size 30 x 25 cm, caption and date (2/19/43) in pencil on upper border, printing instructions on lower border, signed lower left. Some slight soiling, otherwise in very good condition.
