Original editorial cartoon on card in pencil/pen & ink, published in the New York Journal, 1955, shows an empty Soviet prison cell with bloodied chains which are for the moment not in use. The Geneva Summit was the first of its kind and held on July 18th, 1955 in Geneva, Switzerland. This was a meeting of the ‘Big Four’: President Eisenhower of the USA, British Prime Minister Eden, Soviet Premier Bulganin and French Prime Minister Faure. Also in attendance was Nikita Khrushchev of the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was on its best behaviour during this conference (intended to try and resolve some Cold War issues), so imprisonment (and probably torture) of political and other prisoners is “temporarily discontinued”, though Jenkins obviously does not think the leopard will change its spots. Card size 36 x 28 cm (14 x 11 inch), image size 23 x 19 cm, caption in pencil on upper border, printing instructions on lower border, signed lower right. An engraving order is still attached and stamped with the date: Aug 5 1955. ‘Gone to Geneva’ is written on a pasted-on piece of card, otherwise in very good condition.
