Original editorial cartoon on card in pencil/pen & ink, published in the New York Journal, around 1942, shows a tail gunner ‘US aviator’ in an American bomber who is ‘defenceless because of inadequate fire power’. Where other countries were providing strong armour, bulletproof and leakproof protection around their gasoline tanks and powerful turrets in their bombers, American bombers were either pathetically under-armed, or so ill-constructed that they could not use their full fire power. This is seen as unacceptable, and the cartoon is very critical of the government and the US air force. Card size 57 x 36 cm, image size 36 x 19 cm, no caption, printing instructions on lower border, signed lower left. Some slight soiling, otherwise in very good condition.
