Portrait bust to the left within oval of Paulus Merula (1558-1607). Merula grew up in Dordrecht. From 1593 he was professor of history at the University of Leiden. In 1597 he became the University Librarian. In the same year, he was appointed the official historian of Holland on December 21. In 1603 he became rector magnificus. Portretbuste naar links binnen ovaal van Paulus Merula (1558-1607). Merula groeide op in Dordrecht. Vanaf 1593 was hij hoogleraar geschiedenis aan de Universiteit van Leiden. In 1597 werd hij bibliothecaris van de Universiteit. In hetzelfde jaar werd hij op 21 december benoemd tot de officiële geschiedschrijver van Holland. In 1603 werd hij rector magnificus. Hij was een vriend van Janus Dousa en Daniël Heinsius.
