Half-length portrait of Petrus van Musschenbroek (1692-1761). Van Musschenbroek was a Dutch physician, mathematician and physicist, meteorologist and astronomer. From 1719 to 1723 he was professor in Duisburg. In 1723 he was appointed professor at the University of Utrecht. There he was rector magnificus in 1729 and 1730. In 1734 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and became a member of the French Académie des Sciences. In 1739 he returned to Leiden, where he succeeded his teacher 's Gravesande as professor of mathematics and philosophy. In the period 1743-1744 he was also rector of Leiden University. Below the portrait are name and details in two lines in Latin and below that a six line text in Latin by Hendrik Snakenburg.
