Original political cartoon on Winsor drawing board in pen and ink, 1924, published in the Western Mail (Wales), shows the then French Prime Minister Poincare being carted off, in the manner of the French Revolution, to the guillotine symbolizing his ‘resignation’. Poincare, a conservative, was on the point of losing the 1924 election to the ‘socialists’. The typed caption inset into the mount states ‘M. Poincare has had some narrow escapes, but there seems to be no hope this time - May 14, 1924’. There is a label on verso which states ‘original drawing given to Emile Edelin de la Pravdiere (1887-1945) by Illingworth 1924'. An early cartoon by this well-known British cartoonist. In a brown mount 47.3 x 37.2 cm, board/image size 38 x 27 cm, signed lower right. Date also written in pencil on verso. Slight toning, otherwise very good condition.
