Original editorial cartoon on card in pencil and crayon, 1936, published in the Philadelphia Inquirer, shows president Roosevelt (FDR) encouraging a figure representing ‘boondoggling’ to ‘go forth and conquer!’. This cartoon is a criticism of New Deal recovery programs, and particularly the Works Progress Administration (WPA). During the 1930s depression years the term boondoggling was used to describe wasteful projects carried out by the WPA. The Inquirer, a Republican newspaper, would certainly highlight such waste and be critical of the New Deal programs, which they considered Socialism. Card size 43 x 30 cm (17 x 12 inch), image size 38.5 x 28 cm, caption in bottom border and dated Jan. 20 ‘36, signed lower left (date also stamped on verso). Light paper toning along lower right-hand border, otherwise in very good condition.
