Original editorial cartoon on card in pen/brush and ink, around 1938, published in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, shows Uncle Sam stranded up a pole to escape from two mad dogs, the CIO (Congress of Industrial Organizations) and AFL (American Federation of Labor). These two trade union organizations had become rivals by 1938, a rivalry which was bitter and sometimes violent. Just as President Franklin D. Roosevelt (left) had introduced ‘government regulation’ to impose controls on ‘business’, there were calls for him to do the same to control the activities of trade unions. Card size 44 x 34 cm, image size 39 x 30 cm, Caption in top border, signed lower right. In very good condition.
