Portrait of Johan de Knuyt (1587-1654), dressed in a coat with a lace collar. A pendant hangs from a chain around his neck. Bust to the left. At the bottom in the margin a six-line text in Latin. De Knuyt was, among other things, mayor of Middelburg, a Zeeuws commissioner at the Generality Accounting Office in The Hague, and close advisor to Frederik Hendrik. De Knuyt played a major role in diplomatic negotiations with France and Spain to end the Eighty Years' War. Copper engraving by Pieter Nolpe (c. 1613 - c. 1652). Published in Amsterdam in 1644, possibly by Abraham van Waesberge. Source: Rijksmuseum, 2015.
