Medal in honor of Jan van Speijk '(1802-1831). On the obverse the Dutch Virgin with extinguished torch mourning by a tombstone on which a depiction of the jumping of Jan van Speijk's gunboat on the Scheldt off Antwerp on 5 February 1831 on the reverse. Text inside a myrtle wreath on the reverse. Copper engraving by Daniël Veelwaard (1766-1851), after a drawing by Hendrik Vettewinkel (1809-1878). Published in Amsterdam by Gerrit Portielje in 1831. Signed in print. Commander Jan Carel Josephus van Speijk (1802-1831) became famous by detonating his ship to prevent the Belgians from obtaining the flag.
