Original cartoon on Bainbridge board in pen and ink/wash for the Boston Globe newspaper, July 1972, is a comment on the chess world championship match (‘match of the century’) scheduled to take place in Reykjavik Iceland. It shows Bobby Fischer, who would become the first American-born world champion, with dollar signs in his eyes, on a chess board opposite Boris Spassky, the Russian world champion, who does not look very happy with the situation. The cartoon refers to Fischer’s increased financial demands just before the match was due to start which it was feared would result in the match not taking place. Fischer won the match convincingly, this proving in retrospect to be the pinnacle of his career. Signed bottom right. Board size 37.5 x 36 cm (14.5 x 14 inch), image size 32 x 29 cm. With a dedication ‘To my friend Jerry- with all best wishes, Paul’. Excellent condition.
