Original editorial cartoon drawing in pen and ink and crayon on board, published in the Philadelphia Record around 1937, shows President Roosevelt as ‘referee’ in a boxing ring who has problems getting both sides (employers/workers) on board in the New Deal. The workers are represented by the leader of the Committee for Industrial Organization (CIO), John L. Lewis, and the employers by Tom M. Girdler of Republic Steel, who was very anti-unionist. ‘Radical’ ‘unfair’ ‘lawless’ are the criticisms being levelled at the Roosevelt administration. Signed lower right to a Sgt. Ray Smith, caption. Board size 48 x 43 cm (19 x 17 inch), image size 38 x 36 cm. Browning and staining, in grubby condition, especially around bottom borders.
