Details
Original political cartoon ink, pencil and watercolour drawing on board, probably around 1936, but could be later. Day (1892-1988) was a Denver artist and illustrator who was both anti-fascist and anti-Roosevelt, sometimes equating the two with each other. Written in pencil along the top is ‘Portrait of the regard dictators have for the people who worship them’. The European dictators, Hitler and Mussolini, are shown glorifying and fanning the flames of war with the ‘human suffering’ (death, hunger, crippled bodies, blindness, destruction) this would cause and which, in the 1930s, was still fresh in the minds of many who had experienced WW1. Signed in pencil lower right. Board size 47 x 38.5 cm (18.5 x 15 inch), image size 40 x 31 cm. In good condition.
