Details
Original political cartoon ink and watercolour drawing on board, probably around 1936, but could be later. Day (1892-1988) was a Denver artist and illustrator who was both anti-fascist and anti-Roosevelt, sometimes equating the two with each other. Shows Hitler with his ‘world power ambitions’ gloating over the great depression in the USA, where ‘New Deal unnecessary extravagance’ is threatening ‘US economic security’ and leading to ‘serious debt’ represented by Uncle Sam with empty pockets. A caption ‘Not even prepared with it all’ is suggested on a typed note attached top left (which also states: ‘as this caption looks pre-campaign material, another caption might make it acceptable sometime’). Signed bottom right. Board size 48 x 38 cm (19 x 15 inch), image size 41 x 34 cm. In good condition.
