Letter with Gateshead canceled August 23, 1840. World's 1st stamp, introduced on May 6, 1840 by Sir Rowland Hill. Initially the stamp was only distributed in London and later throughout Great Britain. After about a year, the Penny Black was replaced by the Penny Red. This was partly done because the red stamp was difficult to see on the black stamp, while the red stamp ink could easily be removed so that the stamp could be used again. Although the Penny Black was the first true stamp in the world, it is not a rarity in philately.
