Details

Portrait in oval with frame in the form of laurel wreath tied together with long tied ribbon, depicting Cardinal Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle (1517-1586). Maker unknown. Copper engraving, published in: J. le Clerc. "Histories of the united Netherlands (...)", 3 volumes, Amsterdam, 1730. Perrenot was a Habsburg statesman and clergyman. Adviser to Philip II and - after his departure to Spain - to Governor Margaret of Parma. In 1561 he became Cardinal Archbishop of Mechelen. Highly hated in the Netherlands because of the harsh measures he took on behalf of Philip II. In 1564 he was sent back to France by the Spanish king. Later he was envoy to Rome and viceroy of Naples (1571) and played a role in the preparations for the Battle of Lepanto (where the Turkish threat was repelled). From 1579 he served Philip II in Madrid. Source: National Office for Art Historical Documentation, 2014.
