Original pen and ink/crayon cartoon drawing on art card, signed and dated 1937 by the artist at bottom left. By 1937 the likelihood of war and the ‘development of aviation’ and the growth in the German air force in particular were making people in Britain very apprehensive. Aerial bombardment of cities and civilian targets was seen as something unacceptable against which there was no defence (‘umbrella’). Recent use of bombers in China by Japanese forces and the bombing of Madrid during the ongoing Spanish Civil War had brought home to people the damage that could be done. The card measures 38.5 x 30.5 cm. Framed and matted, some light staining, pin-holes at four corners, otherwise good condition.
