Portrait bust to the left of Diederik Sonoy (1529-1597). Copper engraving, maker unknown. Made c. 1680. Illustration in: P. Bor. "Origin, beginning and continuation of the Dutch wars", 4 volumes, Amsterdam 1679-1684. Sonoy was a Cleves nobleman and one of the signers of the petition to Margaret of Parma in 1566. In 1572 he became mayor of Enkhuizen and William of Orange appointed him governor of the Noorderkwartier (West Friesland) in the same year. Under his leadership, the Beggars in 1573 flooded Alkmaar during the Spanish siege, which saved the city. He waged a reign of terror against the Catholics. Later he resisted the States of Holland and Prince Maurits and lost his power. Source: National Office for Art Historical Documentation, 2014.
