Prototype: according to the requirements of the SNCB/NMBS, class 77 is designed as a 4 axle locomotive with 2 bogies, and is suitable for heavy shunter services and all kind of freight train services on the mainlines. Class 77 engines have a power of 1150 kW, a speed of 60 km/h in shunting, and 100 km/h in freight train service. They are manufactured by Siemens/Vossloh Schienenfahrzeugtechnik (VSFT) in Kiel, and can be used in multiple units of 2 to 3 locos, controlled from one cab. In 1999 delivery of the 170 units of class 77 started and will go on until 2005. 20 units (7770-7790) are equipped with Dutch and German signalisation systems, and some have radio control.
