The Perth Mint is recorded as having struck 1,008,000 coins in 1921 which were presumed to have been dated 1922. However, a survey of 1921 pennies shows that about one in fifty have an English obverse, a ratio suggesting that they were struck at the Perth Mint. In 1920, Perth had been sent a supply of obverse dies from Sydney so it could experiment with penny production and in early 1922 it received four 1921 dated dies from Melbourne. The supposition is at least one of the obverse dies sent from Sydney was an English obverse and that it was used experimentally with one or more of the 1921 reverses. The Sydney Mint had access to three of the English obverse type which it had used sparingly to produce the 1919 .//. and some 1920 /./ pennies.
