Details
The Melbourne Mint exhausted the supply of working dies sent by the London Mint and was forced to create a new master die from a pair of working dies in order to continue production. The Melbourne Mint laid claim to the additional work it had undertaken by adding a '.' under the bottom scroll as an 'unofficial' mint mark. In creating the new reverse master the Melbourne Mint also tooled the legend resulting in curvature to the base of the lettering. Proofs of the 1919 //. Penny were struck to mark this event.
