Example: This train was one of the 1st generation Trans Europe Express trains and a product of the joint efforts between the Swiss (SBB) and Dutch (NS) railways. Five train sets were put into service in 1956. Three at NS and two at SBB. Due to the electrification of the TEE routes, these diesel multiple units became obsolete and were taken out of service in 1974. In 1976 the trainsets were purchased by Ontario Northland Railways and placed in service on the Toronto and Timmins route. In their original line-up they ran until 1980. The line-up was then changed with the replacement of the original diesel engines by EMD FP7 engines, with which they remained in service until 1992. In late 1990, a number of surviving passenger coaches were acquired and restored by one group in Switzerland.
