Details

The monument to Count Frédéric de Mérode is an “Art Nouveau” style stele created by sculptor Paul Du Bois on the Place des Martyrs, in the heart of Brussels. The monument stands on the south side of the Place des Martyrs, the main face facing north. It once stood closer to the monument to the Martyrs of the Belgian Revolution of 1830, but it was moved to its current location during the redevelopment of the square in 1979. It responds to the monument to Jenneval erected on the north side of the square in memory of the author of the words of the first version of the Brabançonne. The monument was created by sculptor Paul Du Bois from plans by architect Henry Van de Velde and inaugurated on September 24, 18981. It honors the memory of Count Frédéric de Mérode, hero of the Belgian Revolution who died in Malines in 18301. He was the first member of the Belgian high nobility to be victim of the battles of the revolution.
