Details
Originally named Octavian, Augustus is considered to be the first emperor of the Roman Empire. He was the adoptive son of Julius Caesar. Augustus' reign initiated an era of peace named Pax Romana in which the Mediteranean world remained at peace for more than two centuries. When he died, the Senate made him a god and went so far to rename the month of Sextillis to what we know now as August. His names Augustus and Caesar were adopted by every subsequent emperor. He was succeeded by his adoptive son (and former son-in-law), Tiberius.
