Details

This tableau is the first station of the Way of the Cross that was made from 1919 for the R.K. Louis Church under the protection of the Holy Angel Guardians, on the Brandtstraat in The Hague. This church was demolished in 1981. The tableau is made in sectional technique, a technique designed by De Porceleyne Fles and introduced at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900. Similar to stained glass, the shapes of the tiles are adapted to the color areas. The tiles were formed from layers of clay to be fired at a very high temperature, almost like porcelain. The color pigments were mixed with the clay mass. This tile is non-porous and therefore an indestructible and weather-resistant product, but very labor-intensive. Tableau, entitled 'Jesus is sentenced to death', made of porcelain tiles, by De Porceleyne Fles in Delft after a design by L.Th.C. Lourijsen, 1919-1930 Source: [03606], Tile Collection, Dutch Tile Museum
