Details
Non-circulating coin. The special collector coins celebrating the Intemational Polar Year are issued by the Central Bank & Financial Services Authority of lreland in conjunction with the Department of Finance. The Antarctic Explorers Proof coins have been designed by the renowned Irish artist, designer and medallist, Thomas Ryan. They feature on their reverse portraits of the Irish Antarctic explorers, Ernest Shackleton and Tom Crean. Dressed in their fur mitts and cotton gabardine overcoats they prepare to set of the heroic journey to fetch help for the trapped crew of the Endurance. Appropriately the National side of the coin depicts the Irish harp that has been used on Irish coins since 1928.
