Details
Silver and white enamel Maltese cross with ball tipped finials, a gilt, green and amber enamel wreath of oak and laurel between the arms, on crossed swords and swivel crown suspension; the face with a circular central black enamel medallion with the gilt lion rampant of Belgium encircled by a red enamel ring inscribed with the Belgian motto Belgian motto ‘L’UNION FAIT LA FORCE’ (Strength through Unity) within a beaded border; the reverse with a central black enamel medallion with the monogrammed gilt letters ‘LR’ for ‘Leopold Rex’ within a red enamel ring decorated with stylised lilies within a beaded border; loss of enamel from the tips of the left, right and lower arms, some old minor repairs (see illustrations); on replaced correct ribbon. The Order of Leopold is both the oldest Belgian order, having been created in 1832, and the most senior. The order is awarded for long and distinguished service or for notable achievement. Insignia of the Order after 1951 bear the Belgian motto in both French and Flemish. A good quality older example.
