Details
Box (250x117x56mm) is most likely of Chinese origin. It says so on the bottom but this information may just relate to the contents. The box, patented April 1923, is made of tin and has a sliding lid. Printed, including the bottom, in yellow, black and red. With on top and on the sides images of the tiles and promotion for the Babcock brand and ‘the The Fascinating Chinese Game ’of the Mah Jongg Sales Co. of America. The interior has a big compartment for the tiles and two smaller ones for counters etc. Tiles (20x27x10mm) are Chinese. They are made of a good quality, matured but somewhat murky bamboo. The engraving is average. There are four spare tiles. One with drilled in trial dots. Counters are made of bone with Western denomination. Dice (4x) are made of bone with Chinese points. Their container is a rather petite Cricket box. Wind indicator is a small bettor made of red and dark yellow celluloid. Instruction manual is the red Babcock booklet. Printed for the Mah Jongg Sales Co. of America. Tenth edition July 1923.
