Details
Box (214x173x60mm) is of Western/US origin. See backside: ‘Patented February 27, 1923. Tindeco.’. Made of red and gold printed tin. The attached and overhanging lid features the Peling-logo with on both sides Chinese characters. This logo appear also on various other sets. On the lid and the sides traditional Chinese ornaments are printed. The tin box is in exceptional good condition. The yellow copper inside has a loose divider to separate tiles and counters etc. Tiles (21x30x12mm) are Chinese. The bamboo is of a better quality. The engraving is exceptionally good and intricate. Especially Bamboo 1 (a peacock), Dots 1, winds, dragons and flower tiles. The colors are however a bit on the pale side. Counters are made of rather coarse bone with Western denomination. Dice (4x) are made of bone with Chinese points. Their container is a Cricket box. Wind discs are made of white bone and feature green characters with red initials. Their container is a bone Ming box. Instruction manual is one of those standard, endlessly reprinted Chinese brochures. The printer used Western illustration on the cover. * The patent is printed in tiny letters on the back of the lid. The box is also interesting for tin collectors.
