Joannes Andreas (Karel) Houben (Munstergeleen, December 11, 1821 - Dublin, January 5, 1893) was a Dutch priest of the order of passionists. He was canonized on June 3, 2007. Biography In 1845 he entered the Congregation of the Passionists in Ere (Belgium) as Charles of Sint Andries. He made his profession on December 10, 1846 and was ordained a priest on December 21, 1850. He was sent to the Monastery of Mount Argus near Dublin and later renowned for his healing powers. Many visited him to find comfort and healing. Many miraculous healings were reported. Father Karel was nicknamed 'the man with the blessing hands'. During his lifetime he was already considered a saint in Ireland. After his death, believers continued to visit his grave. His birthplace in Munstergeleen also became a place of pilgrimage. In 1935 the Passionists founded a memorial chapel in the birthplace, which attracted more and more pilgrims. In the nineties of the 20th century, the number of pilgrims - from Limburg and the rest of the Netherlands - visiting the birthplace continued to increase. Miracles Father Karel Houben is said to have healed two critically ill people. These healings, including that of Dolf Dormans from Munstergeleen, who had been healed of an incurable intestinal ailment through Houben's intercession, were recognized as miracles.
