Details
Emperor Nicolas I signed an edict on establishing of Savings banks in Russia, from which the history of the present Saving banks began, in autumn, 1841. Thus the savings business in Russia was started. The first banks were opened in 1842 at Moscow and St. Petersburg safe treasuries, as well as in Odessa at the Public Charity Department. Later, in 1860th, 45 such Savings banks were established nearly in all principal towns of provinces of the country. They were founded for savings of small sums with accrual of interest. The first depositor of the first Savings bank Mr. N.A. Christophary and the building of the first Savings bank in Saint Petersburg are depicted in the stamp.
