Details
Beginning in 1831 new coinage equipment and modified dies produced a raised rim on each side of these coins. Proofs and restrikes were made at the mint for sale to collectors. Restrikes are believed to have been struck in 1858-59. Two varieties exist in the restrikes: one with reverse of 1836 (large berries) and one with reverse of 1840-1857 (small berries). With original half cents of 1831: beware of altered date.
